The sushi rice was mushy, the rolls lacked flavor. Almost every roll we had tasted the same. There was hardly fish in it, just a tiny sliver and a big hunk of cucumber. I felt like I had 4 rolls of cucumber rolls. I normally don't go for sushi in St. Louis but was desperately craving it, so we thought we give it a try.

So me and the BF wanted to try a different sushi place than our normal pics, so tried this place. I must have visited on a one if their good serving days because we loved our food. It was very good and we even ordered another role. The drinks were good too. We ate inside, although it was an okay day outdoors. I would return!

Went for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Sushi was pretty decent, but I was more impressed by the ramen bowl. I had a spicy pork belly ramen which was more than enough to fill me up. Quirky anime atmosphere took me a little by surprise, but all together was a pretty decent place for a nice lunch.

Blue Ocean Sushi is definitely THE BEST Japanese restaurant in the US. I moved to Los Angeles from Japan about 3 years ago, and I've been traveling and trying to find a superb Japanese restaurant that has the foods as good as the restaurants in Japan. It was Blue Ocean Sushi indeed, that brought me memories of my childhood in Japan. The ramens at Blue Ocean Sushi are super great. And the staff there, are really nice and sweet. If anyone has a chance to visit St. Louis I highly recommend Blue Ocean Sushi. As for the locals, you're very lucky to have Blue Ocean Sushi near by! If you think the sushi there is not good, then, you'd haven't tried real traditional sushi in Japan instead Americanized sushi.

Seems I'm on to my second "wish I had a half star" review. Would rather be 2.5 stars. I've been going out to eat a bunch on my work trip and decided sushi was a good change of pace. All-you-can-eat seemed to catch my attention. I went with two other friends and we all went different routes. One ordered the spicy ramen, one some sashimi and a chicken teriyaki bowl, and I got all-you-can-eat sushi. We ordered drinks, which took a little while, but it let me plan my choices. I went with a few hot apps and the others ordered their food. I finished my apps and ordered sushi. The sashimi plate and sushi came in a timely manner, but still not ramen (about 15 mins from when he ordered.) I got through my sushi, which was good. My friend also enjoyed his sashimi, though he felt it was quite thinly sliced/skimpy. I ordered my second plate of sushi and we asked about the ramen. The waiter kind of seemed surprised it hadn't come out and said the kitchen was busy (I think he forgot.) The ramen came out, and my friend said it tasted good, but the noodles were sitting for too long and got a bit mushy. Now I'm not a ramen snob, but I do know you're supposed to try and eat the noodles first and fairly quickly because the texture is important. These had been sitting for some time... The rest of the sushi came out as well as the chicken teriyaki. Overall, the food was ok to good, but the service was TERRIBLY slow and the waiters did not check in with us. I don't even think it was to be rude, but they just didn't seem to know what they were doing. In the end, we were there at least a good 2 hours and I was only able to get in 3 orders of sushi/apps, and not particularly quickly.

We've been here a few times and always been satisfied with the sushi.we always get the all you can eat plan which has a good variety of sushi rolls, nigiri and appetizers. The seaweed salad is excellent and the nigiri is great too . unfortunately I can't say the same about their customer service.Every time we've been there the hostess seems to be clueless of what his or her job is and they are not organized at all.The management should train staff especially the hostesses to be more customer oriented since they are the first encounter customers have when they walk in.

I recently had Blue Ocean Sushi. We ordered the pork pot stickers with the crab ragoon for starters. The crab ragoon was the winner of the two. We ordered 3 rolls. The Blue O, Take A Chance and Spicy Girl. The Blue O was my favorite and the Take A Chance my least favorite. I'll be back for the Fried Philly Roll and The Spicy Fried Calamari Roll.

I have only been here once and I really enjoyed it. I went with friends for the Wednesday happy hour where you get 2 for 1 drinks, and half priced sushi- regular and special rolls. Great deal if you ask me! The happy hour runs from 4-7pm and is different everyday of the week. I felt like the regular prices outside the happy hour were very fair compared to similar caliber sushi houses. The quality of the food at Blue Ocean is just as good as their pricier counterparts. I had the Bazinga roll and the Spicy Calamari. My vegetarian friend enjoyed her avocado cream cheese roll and veggie roll. Other rolls ordered on our table included Spicy Girl, Sun Rise and Fried Philly. The spicy rolls had a nice kick to it without being overpowering. Service was attentive overall and out waiter was nice and caring. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting some awesome sushi in that area of the city (The Loop is a very popular part of the city with cute and eclectic shops). Can't wait to go back there.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the menu is very extensive and straightforward. There are anime characters drawn on the walls. This place is particularly famous for their special rolls, which do resemble the Japanese rolls that people associate with sushi. I interpret it as a fusion of Korean kimbap and Japanese sushi. I visited many Japanese restaurants in the city and found people love this 'rice sandwich' type of rolls. The rolls are coated in heavy seasoning/spice/sauce and look colorful. One of the questions is you could hardly perceive fish since the sauce dominates. The fillings in the rolls also include seasoned/pickled vegetables, egg, meat and imitation crab. The rolls taste alright, some actually delicious, but this 'creativeness' does inevitably compromise the authenticity. I couldn't rightly say this is a good variation or not, since it does have a large group of supporters here, suggested by the positive feedback in the reviews. If you are looking for fish and fun rather than serious authentic sushi, this place is a very nice candidate.

The concept of "all you can eat" sushi is usually frightening for the faint of heart. Get over your fear and head to Blue Ocean ASAP. You will be treated to plate after plate of consistently great food at a reasonable price. The only reason they did not rate five stars was a miscommunication that led to a delay in our order but it was corrected and worth the wait. Will definitely be returning.

ok seriously. I love tani sushi bistro but it was relocating, my boyfriend and i went here instead. Ya so not the same. The sushi was mediocre at best. The waitress was very nice so theres one positive. It took forever to get my "cosmo". I put it in quotes because it was suppose to be a cosmo, im not quite sure what i recieved though. So after i drank that, i switched to bud light. hard to screw that up. we only ordered 2 rolls and it took forever and a day to get them. I would never go here again.

Restaurant was ok, not super great but not bad just pretty average. Ramen was a bit bland. No kids menus or seats, interesting way to call waiters though, there is a button on your table and they basically just leave you alone unless you press the call button.

I had some really good ramen out of town and wanted to find a place in the Lou that would be just as good. This is not it...the service was nice and I ordered it to go as well. They packed it nice...that's about it. The ramen was extremely salty and the veggies were all mushy. I WON'T BE BACK

We love Blue Ocean. The sushi is great and I love the location on the loop. A lot of the negative reviews have been about the service. I agree that the service is not fantastic and at times can be pretty bad, but I think the sushi is good enough to overcome the service. We love the specialty rolls. Especially the Cardinal and Bazinga rolls.

Came here because I had time to kill I love sushi and saw a happy hour which I thought would equal a win. Disappointed to find out that the happy hour only applies to parties, not hungry people by themselves. Food has spice levels of 3 and 4 that I ordered and they were bland. Glad I only bought two overpriced rolls. Service was solid, but overall no thanks never again!

Our meal was great and the staff was friendly. The decor is a lot of fun anime scenes. Only thing keeping it from five stars was the pacing of the meal, very disjointed. We placed our drink and food order, waters got delivered to the table and then it seemed awhile before the first part of our meal showed up. Oddly, the first thing to show was the sushi rolls, followed by our drinks, then the miso soup. After awhile longer my sister's entree came but the rest of us were well into the rolls by then. All of the food was delicious and we enjoyed it but the flow of the meal was odd. On to the sushi, we really enjoyed the flaming Take a Chance Roll, and the caterpillar roll the most. We got the Kurt Cobain set to share so we had 7 rolls amongst the three of us and later ordered an additional chefs special. All tasty, I recommend that approach to getting a good variety. We went at 7pm on a Saturday and were glad we made reservations. We hadn't been sitting long when we noticed a line for tables.

I want to start by saying that the sushi at this place is really good. I took my friend here last Saturday for a late bday dinner. We were there about 8pm. The place was not very busy at all. Bonsai was our server and she was awful. Barely came back to the table. She would disappear for long periods of time. We watched her stand at the pos system not doing anything while we waited to order more food. I ordered a sushi roll to take home and she brought out the wrong roll. She was tipped based on her poor service. I checked my bank statement a couple days later and she gave herself a larger tip then I originally put on my receipt. I called last night leaving a message for the manager but no one has called me back today. Called again this afternoon and no manager to speak with yet again. DONT GO HERE THEY ALLOW THEIR SERVERS TO STEAL!!!!

  • Kenny R.

I would give you 18% more stars but you added 18% gratuity for a party of one (me)! Automatic 18% is not gratuity, that's an upcharge. You don't do that...you just dont. PS...your menu is awesome!

    (1)
  • Christianne Z.

Overpriced for how tiny the rolls are, seriously. They looked like a four-year old was playing around with seaweed, rice and tuna. Also because they are understaffed, the service was pretty slow. Try another sushi joint if you can.

  • Rich K.

Ate here a few months ago and 'meh'. The sushi is really no better than anything you get at Wasabi or Drunken Fish. The service leaves a LOT to be desired. And the last time I was there I left a 20% CASH TIP on the table and they charged a $5 tip to my credit card. I have the receipt to prove it. I guess they felt that 20% wasn't enough for their average sushi and sub par service. At the time I lived an hour away and the drive to confront them would have cost me more than the $5 tip. If you leave a cash tip and pay with a card, THOROUGHLY SCRATCH OUT THE TIP SECTION AND CHECK YOUR CARD STATEMENT IF YOU EAT HERE. There are better places throughout the city to eat sushi. Nippon Tei, Mizu, Wasabi, Drunken Fish are all better places to enjoy sushi.

ordered from this place again and the lady on the phone was so nice! She even gave us a free order of crab ragoons because i had told her how good their food was! food was awesome again- if i wasn't moving out of state i would be going to this place a lot

I'm very disappointed with this place. I've been eating here for two years-- the sushi isn't the greatest, but I'm in Missouri, and it's what I can afford. The happy hour prices are pretty affordable. Last night they attempted to charge me full price at happy hour and claimed it was in error. They adjusted my bill (a difference of $15), but I overheard a conservation/argument with a man (and his wife) next to me. They refused to honor his "2 for 1" happy hour beer order--despite the fact it was clearly outlined on the menu happy hour is happy hour is happy hour. I was confused until I come here and read ANOTHER review of someone claiming they didn't honor the happy hour price because they weren't in a "party." So it seems they decided happy hour only applies to "parties" of more than one-two people, but did not update their website, menus, or outdoor advertisement sign. Sorry, Blue Ocean sushi, but if you're going to change the rules you need to update everything accordingly and accept the fact you're going to lose a lot of business. Don't pull fast ones on your customer base. I hope people read this review and decide to take their business elsewhere.

Best place to get ramen! And their miso is amazing! So many places do miso as just paste and water, they go that extra mile with a homemade dashi stock, and it really pays off. Even on a hot day, it's incredibly refreshing. I like how their dishes are simple, but flavorful. It's street food, which really appeals to me. Simple food, prepared simply, with lots of flavor, and nothing in the dish that doesn't need to be there. I also tried their green tea ice cream, which I found out they also make themselves. It's nondairy, not too sweet, not too bitter, it's a perfect blend of sweetness, the bold impact of the tea, and chocolate sauce.

We've had blue ocean sushi a few times now and are impressed with how good their rolls are! I don't know why it has some negative reviews, this is the best sushi we've tried in the St. Louis area. We've tried sushi AI, wasabi, drunken fish and others and this is by far the best sushi!

I have been going here for 6yrs now great food and atmosphere! You have to try the beachy roll and ask for Pui!

Last time i went, we found a bug in the ice water. Then we asked the manager to come and change a glass of water for us. However, she said its a food fly and totally edible. If we don't like it, she can change that for us. Then, she charged auto gratuity and said it's the restaurant policy. We felt sooooo disappointed by the way she treated us. Don't recommend to go, unless you like eating flies.

I have been coming here since they opened a few years ago, and I can safely say that Blue Ocean is my favorite Japanese restaurant in STL. I have a shellfish allergy so I can't say much about the sushi, but the katsu curry is amazing!! Fun atmosphere and music choices, and the staff is very sweet and prompt. Friday and Saturday nights can also get pretty busy (especially when Wash U students are in town!!) so I recommend calling ahead about the wait.

We are very disappointed by their service and mandatory 18% gratuity charge. The waitress was ok at the beginning but became hurry as we continue to order items for the $16.99 all you can eat lunch. The menu says there are Rolls and Nigiri but there is only one Tofu nigiri, the rest of 13 items are Rolls. They charge tips for 18% automatically regardless how many people in the party. We have 3 people. In their menu, it stated: if you don't like the mandatory gratuity, this is not a place for you. That is correct. Will not go back.

I can't really compare Blue Ocean to other sushi restaurants because Blue O is the only place that I go. For me, it's as good as it gets. I've never had a bad roll but my favorites are the AK-47, Klingon, Firefighter and the fried sweet potato rolls. For apps the fried calamari is my go to. For drinks, the Thai Iced tea is delicious. My favorite thing about Blue Ocean is the staff. Manager Pui goes out of her way to make sure every customer has a good experience. Many of the staff members are first generation American immigrants and they go out of their way to please! In short, this is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in Saint Louis.

  • Tony C.

I love this place! I've been here a bunch, and it's really my go-to sushi place. The sushi meat is always fresh and the vegetables are too. Love the klingon roll, the dragon roll, or basically anything with sweet potato! Prices recently jumped a dollar, so it's a little less perfect, especially for rolls like rainbow, which aren't as great as some upscale places, but now as expensive as them. Great 2 for 1 happy hour with domestics and house sake (gekkeikan I think). Haven't had much else. Overall, because every time I've been there it's consistently fresh, this is my favorite place for sushi in St. Louis, and I'd definitely recommend it!

Never again. I used to go here throughout high school for the easily affordable and decent quality sushi hour until a recent incident at Blue Ocean. I had to flag down a hostess to be seated, get someone for drinks (which were not served for 15 minutes) as well as order. My two dining companions were served at different times which led to an awkward dining experience. Our waiter misunderstood my order, and, after an hour of waiting, brought out 5 full sushi rolls instead of 5 a la carte pieces. A fellow waitress then insulted my intelligence and blamed the miscommunication on me by stating that the menu was "pretty easy to read and understand". It then took 10 minutes to convince the manager not to charge me for roughly $60 of sushi. Such a disappointment, I'll never go back.

Came here for lunch. Service was slow; it took about 25 minutes to get our food. I also wasn't so sure about if I had to use the 'service' call button on the table. When we asked for a fountain soda, it took her 5 minutes to bring it over. It also wasn't busy, there were maybe 4 parties in the restaurant when we came in. I ordered a bento box with Chicken Kara Age and Veggie Tempura- it was fresh and hot when it arrived, but it didn't stand out - it wasn't spiced well or spicy. The veggie tempura was weird, it was like the veggies weren't cooked well enough. The veggies weren't seasoned and they were undercooked, I guess I'm just not used to them that way. The chicken kara age was similar, not all that flavored, but fried thoroughly.

Miso was great at least. The service was god awful. Basically random people hovered over my shoulder, waiting for me to order. They spoke little to no english, but nodded constantly as if they understood. They dont even know the names of the rolls they serve. I wont be going back

  • Leslie S.

Went for lunch. What a fantastic lunch deal they have for a sushi lover! From 11-4pm every day, you can get the $10 bento box, which includes 2 items from a limited selection, which included chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, shrimp tempura, but especially sushi. Of your 2 choices, when you get a regular roll, add $1, or when you get a special roll, add $4 each. I got 2 regular rolls for $12, and it came with something like rice vinegar cucumbers, which are so delicious and a uniquely sectioned orange, which was fresh and juicy. I think there was something else in the bento box but don't remember, but what a great deal! I so very much want to come back for this deal!

Let me start by saying that the sushi is awesome! Always fresh and always delicious. The reason for the low rating is the payment issue. DO NOT use a credit or debit card at this restaurant! They will always take out more than what you leave on the receipt. First time it happened I thought maybe it was an innocent mistake. Second time I had forgotten about it and it happened AGAIN. Third time?!? Lets just say that I have learned my lesson. I always leave a 15-20% tip and for them to take it upon themselves to add more is ridiculous and wrong. Not to mention probably illegal. I may return again because like I said the sushi really is fantastic but I will only be taking cash with me.

Food is good with a wide selection of choices. They have some crazy rolls. Service was fine when we visited. Only complaint, we wanted to sit outside but the werent serving due to people harassing customers when they are outside.

  • Bill H.

Food was o.k. Got the all you can eat and they scolded us because my wife took a bite of a crab rangoon, and yes she ordered several rolls of her own. The waiter reached across my wife's face, mid conversation, to pick up her straw wrapper... then added an 18% gratuity to our bill. I normally tip at least 20%. Won't be going back

  • Douglas W.

Worst restaurant ever been to. When we got in, the manager did ask us about booth or table, but within seconds after we wish to get tooth, she told us only bar seats were free with very rude tone. After about crazy 40 minutes, we finally got the food. Food is okay, could taste a lot MSG, but the services is worse. And they tried to charge us more than 15% tips. I told them I would only pay $2 based on the food and unfriendly manager. Manager said they gonna call POLICE on me. Well then, 0 for tips. Don't think they want serving people.

Sushi I'm no authority on sushi. I quite literally started eating sushi this year. I tried it years back at what at the time was the best in the city. I don't remember finding what I like. I definitely have grown up and this could actually all be attributed to me having adult taste buds now. But I can't find what I don't like and I love Eel... I should mention I'm a nerd so anime and Asian women serving me food can never make for a bad time.

3/5 I find myself coming to this place more for their happy hours than anything else. They offers varieties of different happy hour options daily, which to me, is a very good deal if you want to eat sushi and not break the bank. Their rolls and sashami selections are not anything to rave about. It is pretty typical compares to any other American Sushi Bar. I particularly liked their Naruto roll: delicious with a kick. Overall, good place to go if you want a good deal on sushi for happy hour.

Blue Ocean Sushi has a convenient location on the Delmar Loop, but some of the most terrible customer service I have experienced so far living in St Louis. The sushi is not amazing, but it is decent, and a few of their specialty rolls are quite good. (Tip: On Wednesdays from 4-7pm they have sushi happy hour, $7 for specialty rolls and only $4 for regular rolls! This alone is worth checking out) However, I was really unhappy last time I visited. I have been over 10 times now since living near the loop and being a sushi addict, and I have repeatedly ordered the "Bazinga" roll. It is supposed to have tempura shrimp, asparagus, avocado and tobiko, with crab stick and sauce and crunch on top. It was amazing the first several times I have had it. But last Wednesday, I ordered this roll, and it had a completely different sauce. It tasted like a BBQ sauce as opposed to a spicier version of eel sauce, which it is normally like. Personally I hate BBQ sauce, and know that it was never made like that before, because it is almost always my go-to roll that I order there. Anyway, long story short, I asked the sushi chef if the sauce was different (I was sitting at the sushi bar) and he said he didn't think so, but he just used what was in their squirt bottle. (weird he didn't know?) then I asked the waitress, and let her know that I couldn't eat it, Im sorry, I don't usually do this, but it was completely different than usual and her only response was "Well its not different" and "we didn't change it". Oh really miss? Did you fill these bottles with the sauce yourself? Isn't it possible that someone made a mistake? Anyway, she didn't take the roll of my bill, even though I literallyonly had one bite. I hate to say that this was not my only bad experience at this place in terms of service. if you're looking for decent sushi at semi decent prices, go ahead. If its happy hour, for sure. Otherwise, I would try the places over in the Central West End, both for quality and actual customer service.

The fish tastes fresh and doesn't raise any eyebrows slash hasn't made me sick yet, which is really all that I ask for from a sushi joint. :) I had the salmon avocado roll (the salmon wasn't as pink as I am accustomed to seeing--not sure if this is a good thing because it means there weren't any additives for color or a bad thing if color is indicative of quality), spicy tuna (did not detect any spice at all, but they were probably just playing it safe), and caterpillar roll (which was great). The miso soup was also more substantial than I am accustomed to and only costs $1/person to add on to your order if it doesn't already come with your meal. The service was great though! I think Biddy helped us, and she was very attentive, pleasant, and friendly. I'm also a huge nerd and enjoyed the anime references everywhere.

Blue Ocean is a strange duck. The decor is awesome, and it can be pretty fun. It has all the makings of a great experience. Then you get the service. I've been here more than a few times, and the hostess often has trouble understanding questions regarding wait time, tables, etc. Once you sit down its hit or miss, my luck usually being a miss. You're seated and served and forgotten about. Getting the check is a 30 minute process for Pete's sake. I actually think it's better to come for lunch, because my lunch experiences have been great in terms of service. Food isn't anything to write home about. The sushi is suspect to me, being in such a landlocked area, and just average and bland. There are way better places to go. The only thing I do like is their ramen. That's excellent. Overall: meh. You're better off going somewhere else.

Vegetarians would love this place! I would recommend this to my friends that are looking for somewhere to chill, relax and talk all night. When I first walked in I noticed two things: awesome decor and great service. They have Optimus prime and Star Wars decor which makes it more fun and casual feeling. Our waiter was super nice and friendly! The food was good too. But the rolls were a little small for my liking. Which was good that I did all you can eat, otherwise my bill would have been very expensive. Their happy hour deal is amazing too: but one get one free! Even with glasses of wine! So good! Service was pretty slow. But like I said before, if you are not in a rush and are just looking for a place to hang for an evening, this place is perfect! I will def be returning! Also, the bathrooms and restaurant in general were very clean. 5 stars!

The first time we went there was for the dinner sushi buffet. We all ordered level 2 and the sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. The service was also insanely slow when we went that weekend, but our server was pretty fun and reminded me of the 1800-collect guy. Since it was a sushi buffet and also on the pricey side, my group decided to be in competition mode with each other (worst idea ever) and ate a shitload of sushi, and by the end we just wanted to puke at the sight of more rolls. I remember walking back with my friends that night in swollen pain because we were being so fat at Blue Ocean, and with every excruciating step we took we swore we'd never go back to Blue Ocean Sushi again because we were so disgusted with the thought of sushi and ourselves at that point. My 4-month-old food baby finally aborted itself when I woke up the next morning. The evil craving for sushi was bound to come back to us sooner or later. They don't have sushi buffet on weekends anymore (I guess it's good they're in a way forcing some control on us so we don't feel tempted to eat ourselves to death every weekend). My Blue Ocean crew had some time yesterday so we went back last night and ordered level 2 again. This time we learned not to compete with each other on how much we ate. I had half as much sushi as I did last time, and was able to actually enjoy my sushi rolls a lot more. However, we also didn't get our money's worth for the buffet this time since we could've just ordered everything from the order menu and paid the same amount. For ~$30, I feel like I could've had a better dinner.

Lunch was ok, but service not great and they are very inflexible. Also charge 18% gratuity for any party size. I will not be going back.

BAZINGA Roll! Enough said. I haven't been to any other sushi places in St. Louis, because every time I am in town, I stop here for the Bazinga Roll and it's amazing! No reason to try out another place..

Great sushi and great service. I highly recommend the Bazinga roll. We went in on a Monday afternoon. Our server was very helpful and swift. Both our meals are outstanding.

I've been coming here since it first opened. The service was quite terrible back in the day but since the new location and new employees it's awesome! Not to mention the fact they deliver. And if you love to eat as much sushi as I do they have amazing options where you can eat your heart out without breaking the bank. Love this place!

Another solid sushi choice in/around STL. Some highlights, all you can eat options (I just can't get into this trends, seems unhealthy and counter productive to me!), pretty good wine/beer choices, location is in the heart of the loop, easy parking on the intersecting street at night but I bet during the day that can be dicey, little call buttons at the table to get your waiter so they aren't lurking over you the whole time. I really have no complaints but the sushi selection, though large, was the same ol' STL selections and too much fried stuff for my liking. I just felt like I was getting the typical wasabi/drunken plate of sushi, nothing super fresh or mind blowing. The edamame was not salty and fresh though which was a nice surprise. If I was in the area I'd go back but I wouldn't go out of my way and if I had the hankering for sushi I wouldn't make it a top option. Meh.

Decor: like an anime/manga fan's wet dream; this place is covered with all kinds of Japanese goodies which is honestly, kind of cool for a sushi place, you know being that sushi originated from Japan and all. There was even a DJ mixing it up in the front. Techno music, anime on the flatscreen, okay I get you. Service: So sorry, but cool decor doesn't make up for bad fish, and bad service. It's a Friday night, and maybe half the tables are full. I walk in, optimistic to try some Saint Louis sushi (I'm from LA). The hostess stares at us blankly as we walk up and ask her how the sushi is, with a look of no understanding she says "what?" and we ask it again. Finally, the third time, she gets the question. I know this is a Japanese restaurant but at least hire someone that can speak partial English... Our waitress takes our order. She is friendly but slow. I notice that there was no teamwork from the other waitresses. We order all-you-can-eat sushi. The first couple rolls come out pretty quick, but the last 3 rolls took 15 minutes to bring out. You start to notice these things when you're conveniently sitting in front of a wall clock. But the timing is not what gets me riled up, it was that one blonde haired waitress who kept walking around the pickup station while our sushi was finished and just sitting there. I wanted to shake her and say excuse me, why don't you help out your fellow coworkers while they are busy with their tables, instead of floating around incompetently with your head up in the air. There was absolutely no teamwork. Management needs to straighten this out. Food: The regular California rolls were alright. I like that they didn't overload the rolls with rice to fill you up. The spicy girl was pretty good. But the fresh fish, not so good. The color of the salmon already hints of its staleness before I take a bite to confirm this. The snapper was chewy and warm. The egg was not sweet enough and had a greenish tint to it (please tell me it's my imagination). To top it all off, the fried cheeseburger roll was disgusting (oh tell me why I ordered this!) All in all, I would not come back here again. 2 stars for effort, but it reeks of disappointment for a sushi lover.

The first thing I noticed about this place was the wall art. It is full of anime. Me and my friend split pot stickers and chicken teriyaki entree. The entree comes with cucumber salad and miso soup. Our appetizer of pot stickers came out and then the sizzling chicken teriyaki. I then noticed in the middle of the meal that we did not even get the cucumber salad and miso soup. I then asked the server. She came over and I did not quite understand her. I think she was trying to say which one I wanted. Well, on the menu if it says "AND" then both, and since it comes with the entree, why not. A little disappointed. I think the server was trying to cheat me and my friend.

Worst sushi ever. My best friend and I went out to try the "all you can eat" deal. They try and stuff you in order to make you waste food which adds extra to the bill. Instead of enjoying your meal it feels like a hassle because you are worried you won't be able to finish and you will have to pay an extra 15$. Also they pressure you to buy the different deals in order to make more money off of you. The waitress sucked and barely knew English too. Fuck this place.

I chose this place for my birthday dinner. I had eaten here about 15 months earlier but had not been able to get back after. It was a Tuesday night so it was pretty empty there. Were were seated and served promptly. The decor is fun but the chairs are a bit uncomfortable. I had a caterpillar roll and a spicy tuna roll and a sake capirena to drink. The sushi was excellent but but cocktail was a little too sweet for me. Next time I'll stick with the traditional sake. I'm intrigued by the all you can eat sushi and may come back for that. Service was good and the waitress was very helpful.

I am writing this review to speak strictly about their Ramen, which is $15. I feel like the ramen is a definite highlight of the restaurant. Let's be honest, to get authentic not from the bag taste ramen, it is not easy in cities that do not have a large Asian population. We came here craving ramen and we found just the place. The broth is very rich and we were told that it takes all night for them to make, something like 16 hours. They don't really give you a lot of noodle, but most ramen places do not either. They provide you with a huge soup scoop, I literally mean soup scoop not a spoon for you to sip your soup from the ramen. There is raddish in the dish, and seaweed and some pickled vegetables. Overall, I feel like even though $15 for a ramen is the MOST I have ever paid for noodle, I actually do not regret it and would come back for more when I am in town again. I feel like their sushi is not that amazing, the table beside us ordered sushi and they did not look spectacular, looks like something you can get from a Chinese buffet but much more pricey. One thing I do have to complain about this restaurant is that we were seated at this weird corner of the restaurant which made conversation very weird and overall made my experience less comfortable, the seating arrangement could have been better and the angle placement should have been more thought out.

So the price for the buffet is a little deceiving. I saw "All you can eat sushi for $20.99 for dinner" and I thought 'Wow. What a great deal." But actually, they have 3 levels that you can choose from and the prices go up depending on what level you choose. Level 1 is $20.99 but has basic rolls and some appetizers. Most of the specialty rolls (including rainbow and spider, etc.) are in Level 3 and cost $30.99 for dinner. It's still a good price if you get mostly specialty rolls since if you buy them separately, it would definitely cost most, but still deceiving since most buffets are one price for dinner. Also, the buffet is only Monday through Thursday. FYI, the buffet isn't one where the rolls are premade and you go up and choose from the bunch. You place your order with the waiter and they bring it out to you when it's made, which means that that rolls are fresh. I had read reviews that the service is slow at peak times so we went in for an early dinner. When we went, there was only one other person in the restaurant so the service was pretty fast. But the place started to fill up as we were wrapping up our meal so I can see how the wait can get long since when we were there was only 1 sushi chef and someone helping with the toppings/sauces. The place itself was very cute and the waiter and the girl helping with the sushi were very friendly. As for the food, the rolls were some of the best that I've had. My friend and I were saying 'This roll is REALLY good.' after each one that we tried! The sushi and the veggies in the rolls were very fresh- especially the avocado! I can't remember what all the rolls were but we ate a lot of the rolls in Level 3 and they were all very delicious. The ones that stand out in my memory are the AK47, Sunrise, Blue O and Cheeseburger (I was a bit skeptical about a Cheeseburger roll because it kinda sounded gross- sushi and cheeseburgers don't seem like they mix. But we couldn't get over how the Cheeseburger tasted just like a cheeseburger and it was actually really good!) When we were finished eating, the waiter brought over a La Flama Blanca Roll and asked if we wanted it. He cautioned us that the chef had made it extra spicy because he accidentally put extra sauce on it. The AK-47 was listed with 2 bombs in hotness and it wasn't hot at all, but the La Flama Blanca Roll was listed as 3 and let me tell you, I'm not sure if it's because it's the spiciest roll on the menu or because of the extra hot sauce but that roll was SPIC-Y!!!! I couldn't eat more than 3 of the rolls because it was so spicy! It seriously was too spicy to enjoy- I can't even remember what else was in the roll. All I can remember is that it was hot! Who know, maybe it's better with less sauce on it.

Positives: ~ Awesome U City Loop Location ~ All you can eat deals ~ Lots of food (you don't leave hungry) ~ Several tasty items Negatives: ~ Dark and dreary (in serious need of a better lighting set up) ~ Service is not what it needs to be for all you can eat "made to order" ~ Salmon was REALLY fishy - NOT GOOD! Overall, I felt I was at the "Home Country Buffet" of sushi restaurants. You leave full and know you got a good bargain for the money, but yet you're never quite satisfied.

We had our lunch on this Saturday noon, but had a terrible experience with super slow service, more than half an hour's waiting with less than half full seats. Also the waitress intentionally adds 20% tips to our bill!! She basically did nothing, even without any water refill. With so-so sushi and food, such terrible service, we will never come back!!!

As a New Yorker, I have been able to sample the very best sushi there is and consider myself a sushi snob. And I would rate NY sushi better than the sushi here. However, considering the fact that we are in the middle of America, I find this sushi great and completely satisfying. When i saw the outside of this place, I did not even want to go in because I thought I would get food poisoning. However, when i walked inside, it was charming, homie, and the staff was nice and helpful. To start, the prices are unbeatable, from the cheap combos, to the all you can eat options. The sushi is very fresh, and there is a wonderful selection of special roles that are tangy, spicy, and sweet with a creative twist. I am sure that people find the Drunken fish to be better, but actually, the sushi quality at the place is undoubtedly superior. I have been here several times and the service as well as the consistency of the food has remained pleasing. I recommend this if you want to eat well and save a lot

My wife and I (lexi) love this place! Weve been going here ever since I moved back to St.louis. Right when you walk in you feel welcomed, the hostess/waitress which has been the same woman everytime were there is super sweet, she seats us quickly, always making sure to get our drink order (beer for me and jack n coke fore the Mrs.) right away. THE ROLLS :) ARE AMAZING...... The spider-roll smh is soooo damn good (we get it everytime) and just about anyother ones on the menu weve had. Trust me you wont be dissappointed. One night we sat thier and talked to one of the other waitresses about life etc. for quite some time and afterwards she sent us this set of rolls that was on fire for free, crazy sauce!

Sushi was great! I always order a spicy tuna roll and the pot stickers, yum! the service was shotty. It took about 10 minutes for the waitress to greet us and take our drink order. We ordered edamame and pot stickers for apps and for my main couse i ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll and my husband ordered the Chicken Teryaki. My spicy tuna roll was delivered with our apps so therefore i had to either wait for my husbands food to arrive to eat or be rude and eat in front of him. Tables are WAY to close together, had to move my table so the gal who say at the table behind us could pull out her chair. Other than that, im a fan! Sushi was very delicious!

The first time I went to Blue Ocean it was fun. The service sucked, but it was still 'fun'. The sushi wasnt all that good, but the creative rolls and the great options in the levels of all you could eat made it more affordable and worth-wild. I was excited to take my fiance out for a date there on a random week night. We got there at around 8:45pm. I was raving about the cool all you could eat sushi mixes but let him know that I wasnt sure what time that stopped but was still excited to have him try some of their fun rolls and other foods. We were seated, I tried to ask when the all you could eat stopped. We were ignored. We waited for a bit, tried to wave down a waitress, still ignored. No, they werent busy, in fact, three of the wait staff were laughing it up at the bar while we tried to get their attention. We were brought water around 9:10. I know the time because I said 'Lets wait another 10 minutes or so and then just leave.' Around 9:22 the waiter FINALLY came over. I asked if they had the all you could eat sushi. He went off, came back around 9:35 and said 'No, not after 9pm'. So with that we left. I figured at first, the wait staff didnt care how they treated their customers since 18% gratuity is added to the bill regardless. Then we both took notice on how everyone else would leave to go check on the people who had already placed their orders while we sat playing with the menus on the table - no not looking at them, literally sliding them around on the table. Then we also took notice on how every time one would make eye contact with us and we would try to get them over, they would turn around and go the other way or run outside. I've never felt so disrespected in my life. When we left there was no sorry, no nothing, just a shrug and the waiter walked off laughing at the bar again. This was once a place I was thinking of holding one of my pre-wedding hang outs or a place that I would recommend to all of my friends and family. After this happened though, I've told everyone I know not to go there. Now I'm warning Yelp. The service there SUCKS. The food is ok, but not top quality sushi or anything. If you feel like being ignored and have mediocre sushi thats over priced in the Loop then this is the place for you.

Meh not a fan of this place. Went in for the all you can eat sushi and let disappointed. Sushi was not the best but it's all you can eat so i expected it. Service wasn't the best either. But hey i can forgive bad service if the food is good, everyone has a bad day.

worst restaurant experience in the last 6 months. setting: monday night $1 nigiri happy hour. problems: 1. we ordered one round of nigiri. quality was fine, but we were still hungry. so we order another round. first round took 20 minutes to come. second round takes around 40 minutes to come. restaurant is not busy. 2. consistent mistakes on each of our plates. we all get different pieces than what we ordered. we talk with the waitress, she reassures us that we wont be charged for what we didn't order. 3. our bill FINALLY comes after trying to wave our waitress down for 10 minutes. everyone's bill is wrong. we are charged different amounts than what we ordered and charged for things we didn't order. some people say screw it, it's just a 2 dollar difference. i am stubborn and flag the waitress down again. 4. waitress is very apologetic, takes my bill to go change it, disappears for 30 minutes. we try flagging down different waitresses, but no one can help us. WE JUST WANT TO PAY, we beg. in the meantime, no one is willing to run the other bills. we all wait. 5. waitress returns after 30 minutes with an "updated bill." IT'S THE SAME BILL WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. i swallow my pride and say, i'll just yelp about it later. i pay for the sushi i didn't order OR eat. 6. menus and happy hour advertises ALL nigiri for $1 a piece. this is a lie; some pieces are $2 but you don't know which ones until you get a bill. fish quality was relatively nice; i didn't detect any sense of unfreshness. i just can't imagine that i would leave the restaurant with such a headache. unless they start giving away sushi, i will never go back.

I had the $10 bento box for my lunch. I chose shrimp tempura and regular roll which is $1 extra. The food was not that great, nothing special at all. I think something is missing for the taste! Their service was great, but I don't think I will go back there again.

I have been to Blue Ocean a few times over the past three years. Unfortunately, I am disappointed at both the food quality and the service here. Today, I went to Blue Ocean for lunch. The pork belly in my ramen, which is my favorite part, was overcooked. The waitress was also unfriendly as usual. I decided to never go back to this place again.

I liked the atmosphere and the quality of sushi at Blue Ocean. We went at lunch time and the prices were reasonable for lunch time. We also had some delicious sake, but it's hard to mess that up. Overall I'm rating Blue Ocean 2 stars because the waitress was HORRIBLE!! She was rude for no reason and acted as if we were a huge bother when we just asked questions about the menu, since we had never been there. I'm sorry... but that's your job as a waitress, don't act like I'm a burden because I don't have your menu memorized. She refused to provide a spoon for the miso soup and claimed "miso soup is supposed to be sipped straight from the bowl". I don't CARE how it's supposed to be eaten, I wanted a spoon and was denied that right as a customer. Her name on the receipt was Ananasan - so I would ask for someone else immediately if you happen to get her. The other huge negative was the time.. There was only one other table at the time and our sushi took more than an hour and a half. You cannot take this long... especially when patrons are on lunch and most likely need to get back to work. It's not even like we ordered any difficulty or special sushi that should have taken longer.

I love this place, and have been here several times. It's cheaper sushi than most places in town. The servers are always nice and have always seated me quickly. The wait for the food is never too long. The sushi is good, and I highly recommend the crab rangoon.

Wow, what a change! I absolutely HATED blue ocean sushi when they first took over Seki's. In the beginning, the qualities decreased, prices went up, and all of the dishes become completely UNauthentic. For example, they used iceberg cabbage in sukiyaki instead of napa and white button mushroom instead of shiitake. Also, the sushi bar looked really messy with some fish hanging out the refrigerated section. I swore I would never come back again. After a long hiatus, I decided to try it again after seeing some positive reviews here. They must have changed ownership because this place was completely transformed in terms of its food! The prices are still pricey (~$20 for sukiyaki), but it was just as authentic as back in the Seki days, and best of all, they served RAMEN. I don't know of any Japanese restaurants that serves authentic ramen in St. Louis, and it's something I've really missed when I moved to the US from Japan. I was really delighted to find that their ramen was actually pretty authentic with lots of toppings and a very meaty broth. The only complaint I have about it that the soup is too salty (I couldn't drink the soup at all), so if they could cut down the salt by half (or give customers the option of customizing the amount of salt), then it would be perfect. I'm really glad that Blue Ocean Sushi has returned to serving authentic Japanese dishes. I will be going back again (probably in the next 2-3 wks).

It's not the food - it's the service. We live just around the corner and order take-out frequently from Blue Ocean. They started adding a take-out charge AND mandatory gratuity for to-go orders which was annoying but not worth mentioning. Then, they stopped including the miso soup & salad that comes with the sushi "platters". So, now you not only pay more than you do for dine-in by way of the mandatory layers of charges but you don't even receive the full order. We've asked specifically for these items to be included (even though they are listed clearly on the menu as coming with the "platter" and it is not noted that they aren't included if ordered to-go) and had hit-or-miss responses. The last time we tried to order take-out and asked that they make sure the soup & salad were included we were told in no uncertain terms that they weren't included with take-out. When I mentioned the upcharge for missing items they stood their ground. I will miss the convenience but not the attitude or rip-off.

I thought the Sushi was quite good. I was even okay with paying $19 for Level 1 of all-you-can-eat. My only two complaints are that since we were there later at night, the music from next door was THUMPING and vibrating our table the whole time. Also, the service was fairly slow between rounds, but I think this was mostly because of the two tiny asian girls across from us who ordered mountains of sushi and then couldn't finish it. (And who didn't read the "rules" about ordering large quantities which was printed clearly in the menu.)

alright, ill be honest, this was the first time i ate real sushi. for the price ($30 all you can eat) it was REALLY good. i honestly thought it would be terrible, i mean who would like raw fish? thanks to my friend lauren i now know that its far from raw fish. we had multiple rolls; my favorites were the cheesburger and blue-o roll (or something like that). the cheeseburger roll tasted just like what you would expect! We also had a few appetizers and each was impeccable. Crab rangoon, spring rolls, and the chicken potstickers were all equally amazing!

My friend and I went to Blue Ocean today for lunch and had a really nice experience. For about $30 we had 1 specialty roll (the TNT spicy with 3 kinds of fish), 2 regular rolls (shrimp & cucumber, spicy tuna), 2 miso soups, an order of edamame and iced tea. Service was on point, ambiance was nice. I will be back for sure. The TNT roll was to die for!!

Some of the best vegetarian sushi I've had in St. Louis! The fried sweet potato roll is to die for. I also thoroughly enjoyed the avocado cream cheese roll. The service was not horrible, but it wasn't amazing either. What I found funny was that I probably could have pulled a dine and dash because my waitress openly admitted to me that she forgot I was there... My bill was under $20, but seriously... How do you forget about somebody that you are waiting on?!? That is why they lost a star from me. I will be back for all you can eat sushi one of these days.

This was the first time I'd been here at the suggestion of a friend and it was GREAT. The waitress was very patient with us since we're not very experienced with sushi. Sadly, we didn't know they closed between lunch & dinner so, we ended up being there after closing for lunch. They were still pretty cool about it. No rolled eyes or anything :) Overall, great service, AWESOME sushi & good prices. With the location, it's definitely a hidden gem in the Loop. I'd eat here again & have already told friends :)

We were here on a Tuesday night, finally trying the all-you-can-eat option after we have considered it many times before. We had the Level 2 and tried pretty much all the nonvegeterian rolls and nigiris (not a huge fan of vegeterian sushi). Overall it was decent. Rolls were small and had alot of rice. But then again we fully expected that. Nigiris were good but the albacore nigiri were super dry. What gives? I wasn't a big fan of the cheeseburger roll. The flavors were interesting but it fell apart before I even attempt to pick it up with my chopsticks. A couple of things that really irked me: 1. Music: We munched on our mediocre sushi while listening to apple bottom jeans and candyshop. I get the restaurant trying for a hip hop vibe but candyshop? really? This is so not 2003 last time I checked. Not only were the music selections dated, the music player seems to stop working every ten seconds. Very un-cool. My advice? If you can't find something unique (could even be instrumental) to play, skip the ghettofabulous songs altogether and let us eat in peace please! 2. Perhaps the restaurant can't really improve here but what is with the bold faced "we reserve the right to charge for un-consumed orders"? The disclaimer was followed by a detailed description of charges by type of leftovers. I sure hope the restaurant had a reason to put that on there, because it was the first thing I noticed on the all-you-can-eat menu. Not cool. Actually I felt insulted just reading it. I don't see many buffets with that warning anymore these days, so why should an all you can eat place still use it? An understandable but questionable practice that hardly seems justified unless the restaurant has had a problem with people ordering an exaggerated amount of food. The bottom line~~~ The all-you-can-eat will fill you up, but not in a pleasing way. Sure you could definitely order $25 worth of sushi using Level 2, but I remember the bf and I getting a ton of quality specialty rolls from Nippon Tei to fill ourselves up for just about the same costs. Do give this place a shot, but you shouldn't get the all-you-can-eat. Their regular menu seems to be fairly decently priced, but I'm pretty sure the portions are small similar to the all you can eat options. In comparison with the rolls, the regular priced nigiri are pretty pricey, at $3-6 per pair. They definitely weren't $6 per pair special IMO.

The interior does need a little help. The cerulean blue walls and bad lighting need to be updated. We were handed about three different menus. The selection and choices were almost overwhelming. Blue Ocean offers "Sushi Sets" that are really nice. Basically, it customizes your choices of the number of rolls/nigiri you want with the addition of miso soup and cucumber salad for a decent price. We went with the Jackie Chan set (2 regular rolls and 2 special rolls for $30) and ordered the Fried California Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Blue O Roll, and Cardinal Roll. Also, since it was Happy Hour, we ordered the Dofu for half off. The Dofu was good, but a little too soggy for my liking; I didn't care to much for the cucumber salad and miso soup (tasted like it had too much salt/msg in it).Holy crab stick! Their sushi was delicious! Everything was fresh and rich in flavor. We ended up bringing home extras since it was so filling. When it was time to pay, our waitress was no were to be found. We just sat there looking around like lost tourists. Right when we approached the counter, she reappeared. I'd love to return and try their All You Can Eat option. Yelpers/Sushi lovers should really give this place a chance.

Not bad for all you can eat sushi! Some of the dishes actually come out in really creative ways like with lots of leafy decorations and/or sauces squirted in artistic patterns. I must caution you, though, potential customer--at peak hours especially, they are INSANELY slow. Maybe one of THE slowest places I've ever gone to for sushi. (Well, actually, I think no one can beat Sekisui in the way of slowness.) If you don't mind the wait and have a bottomless pit of a stomach, I recommend this place!! It's not really on the main road of Delmar but off on a side street which is kind of nice because I never had trouble finding a parking spot! The decor is sort of trendy and modern, by the way. I am thinking their main cilentele is Wash U students.

We have been here several times over the past year. This is actually the first place I was able to get my boyfriend to try, and like sushi. Their patio is fun because it's great for people watching. We most recently went Saturday night around 6pm on Valentine's weekend, so it was our first time inside. The hostess was super friendly and helpful. Our server was great. We ordered two rolls as appetizers, because we were going somewhere else for dinner. He suggested their special deal that comes with extras for a better price. He sold us on their buy one get one happy hour deal. The food was delicious and fast. I would definitely recommend this place and we will certainly be back!

I LOVE BLUE OCEAN! The atmosphere there is really cool and they always have really great music playing. There are so many rolls to choose from, but my favorites are the Fried California, Spicy Fried Calamari, Tuna-O-Rama, and if I'm feeling a little daring the Take a Chance Roll (which comes served in flames!) Every server I have had there has been so sweet and attentive. I also really enjoy their new bar... They have a drink called a Sake Capriniha that I've become really fond of. If you're on the loop and looking for a fun and great sushi bar, this is it!

Blue Ocean Sushi review, in a series of haikus (5-7-5) "Nigiri" Why is salmon warm? Snapper was inedible Many bad. Eel, good. "Level 2 Rolls" ate up one of each most of the rolls were subpar. cucumber, nice touch. "Service" nice smile named Lauren took orders often, and fast. filled my water, lots. "Tempura" beware, it is huge friend could not eat much after, had room for mocchi. "Blue Ocean Sushi" fish not super fresh but lots of options, I'm full best bet, veggie stuff.

Sushi? On the Loop? With a Groupon? As it turns out, certainly too good to be true. Our first trip to Blue Ocean would have been maybe 3 stars. The sushi was pretty good, but like many parties before us, we waited for maybe 40 min after ordering before the food came. There was another table of 2 that came in after us that got their food before us. The sushi, however, was good enough for us to come back to redeem the second groupon. Alas, if only I paid more attention during ECO 100 to the concept of the "sunk cost". Trip #2 started off, like many a yelp reviewer before me, with a cockroach that crawled across our table. The waitress was kind enough to squash it out for us, but it's still pretty gross. As before, we waited a pretty long time for our food (~30 min? for 4 rolls at 5:45 pm?). The sushi was still tasty, but both my dining partner and I noticed that the rolls seemed significantly smaller than last time we came. The kicker was when the bill came, and we saw that we had been automatically charged an 18% gratuity. Given that we had a cockroach on our table and spent a long time waiting for our small rolls, we weren't prepared to tip 18%. We asked to talk to the manager, who told us: 1. They had been having a lot of cockroach problems recently and had been spending a lot of money trying to cockroach-proof the place. (which sucks a lot for them. However, that doesn't mean that we should be ok with cockroaches at the table.) 2. There was fine print on the menu that stated that management reserved the right to charge 15% gratuity on *any* meal. (basically as a way to cover their ass for charging a mandatory gratuity. It's not even for large parties - this applies to every table that eats here. Only a few restaurants can get away with this kind of policy - Blue Ocean Sushi, you aren't one of them.) 3. People that had been using the groupon had been tipping on the post-groupon amount of the meal, so they decided to make it a mandatory 18% for groupon users. (Now that's just sorta illegal. There's obviously no mention of this on the groupon.) 4. If we tipped less, the servers wouldn't be making as much, so we would be punishing the waitstaff for this. (I agree that the waitstaff is not at fault in the matter. Regardless, the tip is the only way for customers to leave meaningful feedback on the meal. At least, it was the only way before Yelp!) In complete disclosure, they did give us a 10% discount on the meal after complaining to the manager. And I tipped around 14%. On the pre-groupon price. In all, the second trip probably deserves a -3 stars. That averages to a 0 star review. We aren't planning on returning to Blue Ocean Sushi again.

This place is TERRIBLE. Formerly Seki (when it was good), I visited this new incarnation over Labor Day Weekend. It was an utter disaster. Octopus Nigiri: TERRIBLE Spicy Tuna Roll: BAD Yellowtail: decent Mackerel: BAD Sushi Rice: TERRIBLE 1 for 5 doesn't cut it. The service was spotty, the waitress was nice, but clueless. Stay FAR FAR away from this place if you are serious about sushi. I was embarrassed to bring my girlfriend here, I thought it was still Seki...

My favorite sushi restaurant in St.Louis!!! Always fast and friendly. Sushi is delicious every time! Ask for the waitress Pui if she is there! She is the sweetest!

My boyfriend bought a Groupon for this restaurant, so we went last night to check it out. We love sushi and had actually been to Blue Ocean Sushi once before and really enjoyed it...so I was expecting an equally enjoyable experience. Not the case, to put it gently. We got there around 9:00pm (they're open until 10 during the week) and were just wanting to grab a few rolls and then call it a night. The palce was far from crowded - may 8 people in the whole place. We were seated right away and ordered edamame for an appetizer. Not good. At all. I've been to more sushi places than I can count (all over the place too, not just in St. Louis. San Francisco, Chicago, New York, etc.) and I think it's fair to say that edamame is pretty much the same everywhere. And that's a good thing. At Blue Ocean, however, the beans appeared to be over-cooked maybe (they had a brown-ish color to them; not bright green like I've always seen them) and they were not crisp. They were mushy and I stopped eating them after a few. Then we ordered. And waited. And waited. And waited. It took over an hour for us to get our food. By the time it came there were maybe a total of 4 other people in the restaurant. The sushi was good - I got the spicy salmon roll, the spicy tuna roll, and the Cardinal roll - but nothing to write home about. I will say, however, that the prices are pretty reasonable. I got the Harrison Ford set, which included 2 regular rolls and one specialty roll for $18. A pretty good deal. And the kicker. As we're wrapping up dinner a creepy crawly bug walks across the corner of our table. I'm probably more scared of bugs than most, BUT...any bug (harmless or not) crawling across the table does not settle well with me. My boyfriend got rid of it...andddddddd it came back not too long after that. Moral of the review, I'm not sure I will return. While the sushi was pretty good, I don't tihnk it was worth the hour+ wait or the several-legged friend that joined us. I'll check out some other affordable sushi places in the area instead.

We got a "Groupon Now" deal for this place the other night and decided to check it out. I was a bit skeptical due to some poor reviews but decided to be open minded. Well it started off on the wrong foot. We walked in and there were about 2-3 tables seated and a couple people at the sushi bar. One waiter was helping a table while another behind the sushi bar kept looking up at us. We were never greeted and stood there awkwardly for about 3-5 minutes. Finally, the woman behind the sushi bar summoned another person to seat us. No apology....ok. While it started a little rough it did get better. The sushi came out pretty quick. One person in our party went with the level 3 all you can eat. I ordered two crab rolls. I have had better, but these were not bad at all. We also had miso soup which was good. Overall, it was much better than I expected, which is nice because I live very close. I can see this as an alternative to Ginger Bistro, which has better sushi but the service is terrible. With the groupon deal I would recommend coming here.

We stopped here for lunch after my long flight from Seattle, and all-you-can-eat sushi was JUST THE THING to satisfy my hunger. I think the prices are spot on for the different AYCE levels. If you can't eat your share of $30 worth of sushi, then that's your own fault. We had a tough time eating that much sushi for each of us, but we managed with the following orders: Salmon Nigiri Spicy Shrimp Tempura Roll Fried California Roll Fried Spicy Tuna Roll (MY FAVE!) Sunrise Roll Cardinal Roll (My husband's fave) AK-47 Roll Fire Fighter Roll Sun Rise Roll They only let you order 2-3 rolls/nigiri per person so that you can pace yourself, and they also will charge you for leftover pieces (which we are used to from other AYCE sushi places) so they have a good system to limit sushi waste. During lunch on a Friday, it was a ghost town inside, but we also went there for dinner on a Sunday night and it got CROWDED. Service never faultered though, woohoo!

I've been to Blue Ocean previously but last night was my first visit to their new location. I'm not sure if I like the new place better or not. The original location wasn't in a great spot but I loved the set up, really cool, small and trendy. The new digs are definitely bigger and still decent but it lacks the unique feel of the old. Also we had a few bugs around us more than a couple of times during our meal, not cool. Although the setting wasn't my favorite, the service was definitely the poorest part of the dining experience. First of all the restaurant wasn't crowded, we were sat quickly and delivered drinks in no time but after we ordered our sushi it was an entire hour before the rolls were delivered. As for the quality and price of the sushi, I can't complain. We had edamame, which was pretty crummy and not at all crisp. For the main course I spent 18 bucks (the Harrison Ford combo, I believe) which got me one of their top tier rolls, two 'regular' rolls, a tiny cucumber salad and some miso. I didn't even realize that miso and the salad came with the combo so that was a pleasant surprise and both were decent. I ordered the AK-47 roll and thought it was pretty great, the other two rolls weren't exceptional but both were good. Overall I think Blue Ocean has a lot to work on. I gave them a 2 star review based on the snail-in-molasses pace in which we were served, the bugs, the iffy edamame and because my beer wasn't cold. The upside of this place is the fact that the sushi is good and at a hard to beat price. I really think that this restaurant could be a 4-star if the staff works on its short comings. I will try this place again and hope it gets better.

The food is delicious, but Mary was the most rude and terrible server I've ever had. I wasn't going to say anything, but after three days I was still shocked by her behavior and decided to call a manager to let them know. The manager actually asked me if I was black or white and then gave a half assed apology after an uncomfortable silent pause.

Pretty good for sushi in STL. Waitress was very nice. My only complaint was that it was slow between rounds to get the food out. My advice would be to order early and a lot.

I'm a total Sushi Snob! Hey, I'm from California and I've eaten at some of the BEST sushi restaurants around...now I live in St. Louis and it seems that the nearest ocean is thousands of miles away!!! Always makes me a bit skeptical of the level of freshness. Well now...my first All you can eat sushi experience in St. Louis...this place is cold, I suspect to make people uncomfortable enough to not linger and leave sooner than they would if they were otherwise comfortable! The waitstaff is extremely slow, probably trained to "take their time" so that before you know it, it's closing time and you can order no more sushi. Even though the restaurant was not busy...I ordered several types of sushi (what I usually order anywhere else) they brought an average of two pieces of sushi every 10-15 minutes...so frustrating! The sushi is abnormally small. The quality if the fish is not terrible, but not the best either. I have actually had better sushi from the Dierberg's Sushi Counter at the MacKenzie Plaza! Gosh, I really didn't say anything nice...OH WELL! Oh and the kicker...their credit card machine was not working this particular night, somehow I had my checkbook on me. I wrote a check and they cashed it several months later...tacky!

Came here with my brother for lunch today, was excited about the all-you-can-eat sushi only to find that it's only Monday through Thursday now. Well I guess I should have looked more into that, cause it is on their website and everything, so I can't fault them too much for that. Anyway, others have said it but it bears repeating: the service here is SLOW. We got there right at the start of lunch and over the whole time there were not more than 8 customers in the entire store, and I have never had such slow service at even a crowded sushi place. And it ain't the server's fault - she was great. But we could see the chef at the counter and he just seemed to take his sweet ass time with everything; in contrast to more experienced chefs I've seen who are careful yet quick. Expect your sushi order to take 30 minutes MINIMUM if the place is empty. I can't even imagine how long it must take if it's busy. The sushi was so-so. Not the worst I've had in St. Louis, and certainly not the best. Also ordered the takoyaki (octopus balls) as an appetizer and I will say that it was some of the best I've had outside of Japan. But other than that, nothing else stood out as being exceptional. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't fantastic either. And for the prices, you can get better elsewhere.

I come here at least twice a month if not more often when I need a sushi fix. They often are featured on Groupon, but even if I didn't have the discount, I would be dining here. They have a great selection, whether you are new to the world of sushi or a seasoned connossieur. My boyfriend always gets traditional sushi, whereas I avoid the raw options and try more interesting fare like bacon asparagus. They have a wide price range that can fit anyone's budget. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is both welcoming and trendy. If you love sushi or want to try it for the first time, this is a great place to satisfy your cravings.

The concierge at the Moonrise Hotel recommended this place to my group after we stated we were interested in sushi for dinner. Upon first impression, the place is very quaint, and the menu looked great. Our server was not exceptional but not unfriendly. Right before our food came, something caught our eye at the next table. It was a roach on its back with its legs kicking in the air. We were shocked and tried to get our server's attention for a number of minutes. Finally, when she saw us trying to catch her eye, we politely told her the table next to us needed some attention. She looked over, saw the roach, rolled her eyes like "not again," and excused herself. She removed the bug and wiped the table down with a wet bar cloth and we watched the next party be sat at that table with no more cleaning than that. We decided to stay and eat because we were so hungry, but for the rest of the night, our server seemed almost mad at us. She was very unattentive, forgot our appetizer then said "you didn't order that, did you?" when we asked her about it (she and my boyfriend had a conversation about what it was before we ordered it), didn't offer to bring it after the fact, never apologized for the roach, never thanked us for staying, gave us nothing for free, etc. This may sound petty, but because we chose to stay and eat, we simply thought she may have brought us some desserts on the house or a round of drinks or something to go above and beyond and improve our experience. Instead, it felt like they just wanted us to leave because we'd pointed out the animal which fell from the ceiling squirming on the table next to us. I would not go back.

No longer offers all you can eat on the weekends...kinda killed it for me... Other than that this is some of the best sushi I have eaten.. the service is a bit slow most the time but I go there for the sushi not the service. they have a trendy bar attached and if you intend on doing any drinking I suggest you go get it yourself. Its cheaper if you walk over there and get it than if you have the waitress go get it for you.. Yes it comes from the same place but if she brings it to you its gonna cost you a bit more. Sushi great, Service NOT. But the sushi is good enough to continue going time and time again. from now on I will only go when it is All I Can Eat.

I like sushi. ALL KINDS of sushi. I've even made it at home. Heck, I'm not even afraid of eating sushi from the grocery store. Good sushi is good sushi, where ever you find it. So when I said I'd go with a friend to Blue Ocean Sushi I was stoked- because All-You-Can-Eat sushi combines two of my favorite things. Oddly enough, the first thing that struck me were the chairs. They are EXTREMELY comfortable- and they're the kind that lets you rock a little bit. Definitely a plus when you decide to start your eating marathon. The decor was alright I suppose. Very calm and relaxing. So we were off to a good start. I went with the Level 2 Special... I figured it was the best value. If I was going to pay $20 bucks for level 1, you may as well pay $5 dollars more and more than double your options. Service was friendly, fast and attentive. No complaints there! I ordered the following in about an hour and a half: Eel Nigiri (x2) Squid Nigiri Octopus Nigiri Salmon Nigiri Shrimp Nigiri Albacore Nigiri Smelt Roe Nigiri Crab Rangoons Salmon Avocado Roll Cheeseburger Roll - just for kicks! Now, the strange part is that it seemed as though the quality of the sushi varied from item to item. Certain items were incredible. For example; the Eel, Octopus and Albacore were all AMAZING. They tasted fresh, the textures and seasoning were right, perfect! Even the Crab Rangoons were exceptional- perfectly crispy without being too hard or crunchy with an extremely delicious hot filling. Then there were items that were about on par with grocery store sushi, like my Shrimp and Squid Nigiri and my Salmon Roll. They definitely weren't bad- but they were definitely ho-hum compared to the above. I'm not sure if I could attribute this to bland taste, or temperature or what... it was just average through and through. Finally, you come to the sad, sad Salmon Nigiri. It was warm, rubbery and *almost* slimy, which is a shame because usually Salmon is one of my favorite sushi fish. The Cheeseburger Roll was... interesting. I guess I would say that it was 'good'... for being a cheeseburger wrapped in rice and seaweed. I feel like it was prepared well... but the flavor combination was just too difficult to fully enjoy. I don't hold this item against Blue Ocean. The same can be said for my outright revulsion at the Smelt Roe Nigiri... I'd never had it before and I don't feel qualified to say whether it was good or bad. My experience was only negative... but maybe I have no taste when it comes to Roe Nigiri? Was it worth it? Oh yeah. I'll definitely be back. The value alone is fantastic- add up my items if you don't believe me! Had I ordered what I ordered a la carte I'd have spent almost $50 dollars in sushi! And most of the items are at least as good, if not better than grocery store sushi... and some items are even on par with Wasabi's fare. Knowing what I know now, I can return and stick to those 5-star items and have an even better sushi eating experience just as cheaply. As a side note, I REALLY wanted to give Blue Ocean 4 stars, just on the basis of those Nigiri items that were SO PERFECTLY prepared... but I just couldn't. That level of quality should be the rule, not the exception... and there were just too many variations for me to justify 4 stars.

Went here recently and have wanted to try The Cheeseburger roll since I saw the write up in Sauce. I have to say that it tasted as close to a cheeseburger as it could have. The lettuce, cheese and beef were exactly what I expected. For some reason I thought it would have BBQ sauce drizzled over it, but I was mistaken. I liked it and give them credit for having something that will entice the mid west clientel :) I cannot remember the names of all the other items that we had, but we tried a lot and ordered off the Level 3 menu. All of it was OK, not outstanding, but not bad. My guy tried the AK 47 and could not eat the last piece...had to give up...too hot! I cannot handle things too spicy, so I did not even attempt it. Will we go back? I doubt it, but it was worth trying. I enjoyed my sushi and my martini :)

Not sooo bad after all. Came here with a group of 10 people. There was a variety of rolls. The fried sweet potato roll was delish! Service was a bit slow, but it was compensated for the extra rolls that they gave us. The rest of the rolls were delish. Don't get the fried tofu! It's simply tofu dipped in tempura batter & fried. I mistakenly ordered it thinking it was agedashi tofu (a sweet concoction of fried tofu with slices of ginger in a lake of slightly sweet & salty sauce). Come here with a really big empty stomach cuz they will charge you for any uneaten rolls & sushi. You can't doggy bag it too! Ambience was kinda cool. There's a bar next door so that you can get some drinks.

tried this last week after hearing a few nice things. very much like!! i am a very unfussy sushi fan. i like simple rolls, casual atmosphere, and quality ingredients. this place really hit the spot. we made it for half price happy hour and sampled quite a few dishes. i think the agedashi tofu and the takoyaki were my favorites. the tofu was light and flavorful with bits of bonito and onion. the takoyaki were like little fried balls of octopus custard. YUM. tempura was thinly breaded with a good selection of veggies - asparagus, shiitake, pumpkin, sweet potato. seaweed salad was fine. nothing special, but a nice balance for all our fried stuff. like the calamari, which was EXCELLENT if a bit salty (friends didn't seem to mind). breaded in panko, with a little bit of heat, they came out looking like onion rings, but inside they were just the right tenderness. they were probably everyone else's fave. we ordered a pair of rolls, too. we got one california - lovely and pillowy and soft - and, upon request, yellowtail with scallion, my favorite. it's hard to screw it up, but somehow easy to disappoint it the fish/rice/scallion are at all lacking in quality. this is probably the best execution i have had here in the city. cool & smooth tuna with slight bite & tang to the rice with a strip of clean green onion. i was super pleased with their roll. i will absolutely go back and order one of these every single time. A++ it was hot as heck in there - maybe something wrong with the AC? - and an automatic air freshener kept spraying cologne smell across our table, but they were apologetic about both. nice & attentive staff. and cool tea infusing contraptions if you order hot tea. with the half price happy hour we made out like full-bellied bandits. next time i'm going to make it for $1 nigiri night. overall, i think this is my new favorite sushi spot. quality stuff & casual enough that you can have a sushi night in absence of a special occasion to excuse the outrageous bill.

Well, just ate there tonight, went out on a limb hoping the issues people talked about here had been resolved. Service was slow, but not terribly. About 10 minutes from the time of placing the order to the sushi arriving on the table. Not a bug in sight. Waitress was not helpful, kept pushing superwhite tuna for some reason, which I suspected was because it was on the verge of going bad, one of my friends gave in and ordered it, said it was fine. I later came home and googled this 'superwhite tuna" and discovered it's not tuna at all, but Escolar, a fish banned in Japan as toxic! Very uncool! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Es… Had the Level 3 all you can eat, loaded up on Nigiri, got more than my money's worth. Not bad. Kampai or Wasabi is still better, but the amount of sushi I ate would have cost a hell of a lot more there.

Went for Level 2 ... was pretty good overall. Liked the music mix, the decor, had very good service. I thought all the food was made well, although I am no sushi expert. Overall a good experience. I will go back. Visted on 7-14-10 around 6pm.

Never will I ever go here again. Attempted to eat here with a friend... ordered a bottle of sake, waited for sushi and then all of a sudden there are multiple cockroaches on the wall!!! I went to alert the server that I would be leaving and not paying and he threatened to call the police haha. really?

If there are any Blue Ocean lovers out there, I hate to tell you this, but our experience was interesting... and not in a good way. And I'm not just a sushi snob ... I actually really wanted to say good things about Blue Ocean because I've been there a few times and have always enjoyed the food. In fact, the food was pretty good last night. However, there were just a few things that threw me off about this particular experience. Perhaps the meal was jinxed from the start, because it started with a vanishing act. What do I mean, you ask? Well, Blue Ocean Sushi used to be across from Thai Pizza on the Loop. However, when I arrived at that location, I was shocked to find that Blue Ocean Sushi was nowhere to be found! There was a new, different sushi place there and I was very confused. Was I crazy? No. Blue Ocean had relocated (without informing me?! what?!). In case you were wondering, they are now near the FroYo (which served us well when we inevitably wanted dessert after dinner). Anywho, once we finally found the place, the four of us sat down around a crowded table (my back was semi-pinned against a wall) and looked over the menu. The menu had a nice variety of sushi rolls and nigiri and a large assortment of sake. Plus, Tuesdays are $1 sake shot nights at Blue Ocean and since the waitress pretty much forced us to get them, we did. The girls and I ordered spring rolls and edamame to chase our sake and mulled over the menu. And here's where the trouble starts. While we were mulling, we happened to notice a man calm his girlfriend's frantic heart by smashing a pretty good-sized bug that was crawling across the wall. Now, I grew up on a farm and live in an older building... so bugs don't freak me out too much--but, that being said, in a restaurant they are unwelcome patrons. Because we were starving (probably because it took us 30 minutes to find the place), we brushed off the bug-siting and ordered. We decided to go with the "Frank Sinatra Set" which consisted of any two Special Rolls and any two Regular Rolls for $25. We went with a Spicy Tuna Avacado Roll, a Crunch Roll, the Beechy Roll, and the Cardinal Roll (to start). While we waited, our spring rolls and edamame arrived. Both were very good--particularly the spring rolls. Of course, it was hard to focus on the food when another (rather good-sized) bug made its appearance--this time on our table. No, scratch that, it didn't just make an appearance, it made an entrance. It fell from the sky and *plop* landed right on our table. Bug sighting number two... we started to feel a little more uncomfortable. But, not wanting to waste our Groupon, we decided to continue the meal. As we munched on edamame and chatted, we noticed that it took a surprisingly long amount of time for the sushi to arrive--and when it did our waitress (rather unapologetically) told us that the "crunch" that was supposed to top our Crunch Roll was not done cooking, so they had brought it out without it. AKA we were given a regular California roll which was somewhat disappointing. Chopsticks in hand, we dug in. The special rolls were much better than the regular rolls, probably because they are covered with eel sauce and filled with delicious things like cream cheese (oh calories, you taste so good!). The Beechy roll was sweet (I'd bet the mango in it had something to do with that) and the Cardinal roll was nice and savory. Needless to say, the sushi was gone in an instant and we decided to order more. At that point, the only real issue was finding our waitress to place another order. Service was pretty slow--though it didn't seem like there were that many people in the restaurant. Eventually we had to ask another waitress for menus. Once we finally did get a menu, we decided on the Spider and Dragon rolls. They arrived about as promptly as the first rolls had, but they were pretty good. We all agreed that the first round of special rolls was better than the second... The Dragon roll was decent (but not super memorable), but the Spider roll (which had some fried crab in it) was just a little too warm for our liking. All of that being said, one of the perks of the meal was our bill; it was only $92! Now, $92 may seem expensive; but for sushi (and for enough food for four people) that is good. I mean, we had a combined 6 rolls, 2 appetizers, 4 beers, and 4 shots. So, I'd say we did pretty good ringing it at under $100. As we signed the check and finished our drinks, we couldn't help but notice another bug on the table next to ours. Three bugs in an hour and a half is rather unsettling. Honestly, I tried really hard to attribute the bugs to the new space... Perhaps they hadn't quite gotten around the bug bombing the place--but the damage was done, we were grossed out. Bugs in a restaurant are unacceptable. All in all, the service was iffy and I may have potentially eaten a bug or two; so, even though the food was pretty good and the price was great, I don't plan on returning.

It kind of saddens me to write this review. My husband and I used to be Blue Ocean enthusiasts. We were regular customers for Sunday lunch when they had AYCE at their former location. The atmosphere used to be great, the servers were friendly, and the sushi was delicious. Then Blue Ocean discontinued their AYCE on weekends (Note: they have changed back to AYCE on weekends) and they moved to a new location. Sometime during that transition the hubby and I began to branch out and try other sushi restaurants. We made the trek to Sushi Ai on Dorsett and really enjoyed it - it had fewer "crazy" options but great, tasty sushi. Over time Blue Ocean sort of lost its charm. Every few months we went back to Blue Ocean to get some of the items that they made best: crag rangoons, squid salad, and funky rolls. They were good, but not as good as before. After a 3-4 month hiatus, we went back to Blue Ocean today. I was somewhat disappointed. The sushi was so-so and one of the rolls had a strange, fishy taste (as if it were not quite fresh). The AYCE tier prices have increased slightly and the squid salad is no longer included. There were other minor issues including a freezing cold restaurant, a decent wait time, and an underenthused staff. Overall, it was okay but not a great meal. I think Sushi Ai is our staple sushi restaurant from now on. For the record, I really wanted to love Blue Ocean today but it just didn't happen. Bring back the old vibe!!

Lemme break it down for you- There are three levels of all you can eat. The more complex the rolls, the higher the level. The cool thing is, if you get the Level 2, that entitles you to all of the rolls/dishes in that level AND everything in the Level 1. Likewise, with the Level 3, you are entitled to everything in Levels 2 AND 1. The Levels also contain nigiri sushi, salad, appetizers. They had a wide variety of traditional rolls as well as Americanized concoctions, I personally, wouldn't go near, but since it's all you can eat, I noticed some people getting the cheeseburger roll just for shits. It's a relatively small joint and I was there with a group of about 20 people or so. Our waitress (Audrey, I think) was amazing and took care of all of us promptly and courteously. I was super impressed with her professionalism and poise during the chaos of serving a group that size with a kitchen staff of five people or so. High five, Audrey! We were ordering massive amounts of food and the quality of the rolls never suffered. I mean, at all. It was amazing. High five, Sushi Rollin' Guys! I can't gush enough about the staff at Blue Ocean. On top of that, they split our checks for us, which is also a huge favor to us. In regards to St. Louis sushi, I have to say that this place is the shit. I have pretty simple tastes when it comes to my rolls, so everything I wanted was in the Level 1 (had all of the vegetarian options). They share the bar with 609 next door, so they can make you pretty much any cocktail you want. I spent about 30 bucks on myself for dinner. That includes two 5.00 cocktails. I would say that's amazing value for the amount of options you have. Based on the previous reviews, I think they have probably improved a lot. Not only was our table ready, there were vases of fresh flowers, too. I thought my stomach was going to f-ing burst and spray a sushi-splosion all over Delmar. Gush, gush, gush. I loved it. Note: That defensive review at the bottom concerns me a bit...Do we really think that's the owner? That's not good...

I'm going to be honest up front. I'm a bit of a sushi snob. My boyfriend would say I'm a HUGE sushi snob -- and I suppose he's right. So when a friend suggested we go to Blue Ocean Sushi for 'all you can eat sushi', I was a little skeptical. All you can eat sushi? For less than 30 bucks? Hmm. The mantra 'you get what you pay for' kept cycling through my head. I had visions of me crouched over a toilet at 2am, spewing up bad sushi. But...I can't resist sushi (or maybe I'm just a good friend?), so I braced myself for the worst and went along. The place is in a pretty nondescript building, across from the Delmar Lounge. It shares it's space with 609. The atmosphere left a LOT to be desired. I felt like I was in a warehouse. Concrete floors and everything. Hmm. It was warm and smelled of smoke. Ugh. It was too late for me to back out now! Like other yelpers have already mentioned, there are three tiers of all you can eat. I went with tier 2, which ran me about 24.99 for dinner. It allowed me to order anything in tier 2, or anything in tier 1. Not bad. Our waitress was cordial, but seemed to rush us along the entire night. Over the course of the evening, I had a few bowls of miso soup, eel nigiri, salmon nigiri, a eel avocado roll, crab rangoon, and albacore nigiri. That's a LOT of sushi. I did the math, and I DEFINITELY got my money's worth. But the important question -- was it good? Well...it was just OKAY. The eel nigiri was tasty (but really...it's pretty hard to fuck that up), the miso soup was average, and the eel avocado roll was good. The albacore was tasty, and the crab rangoon was AMAZING. But the salmon nigiri? Not fresh. Not fresh at all. In fact, although most things I tried were tasty, 'not fresh' was the theme of the night. I was too afraid to try interesting sounding nigiri pieces, for fear of food poisoning. Not a good feeling to have when dining out! It's saying a lot when the highlight of the meal was the crab rangoon. AT A SUSHI PLACE. To be honest, I don't know if I'd come back. The sushi was just a step above the stuff you can buy at the grocery store at the sushi counter. I'm more than willing to pay a few bucks more at Wasabi or any number of other sushi places in St. Louis for decent fish and peace of mind. Sorry, Blue Ocean. You just didn't do it for me. I might come back and give it one more shot. Maybe. MAYBE.

Loved the sushi! Very quality for st. Louis. Had a great atmosphere with upbeat music, great seating, and super sweet staff. The food took a while to get, and its not exactlly cheap. But the experience was pleasent.

To be honest, I haven't been back, so this isn't exactly an "update," but I know that I hate it whenever I go somewhere based on it's rating, only to come back and realize that the rating was skewed. Angela, I'm assuming that you haven't eaten here yet. I agree that you can't beat sushi for under $30--you also can't beat a good HMO when you get sick (okay, it's not that bad, but for the sake of my joke...) "Nathan," it's good to finally meet the owner. Please continue to review your own restaurants on here. I thought about making a witty comeback to your review, but your passive aggressive attempt at diffusion by calling me "man," made me rethink it. Thanks buddy. I'll be down to party at 609 never. Oops, I did it anyway...

I cannot say I am a big fan of the whole level system. It adds way too much ordeal to the whole all-you-can-eat situation. It should just be 17 for lunch (why would someone want to pay 25 for level 3 for lunch???), 25 for dinner, full menu. Paying 30 for level 3 dinner is a bit much for this place especially since it is not up to standards. I have been here on 2 occasions, dinner and lunch. For dinner, I ordered the level 3, which includes pretty much everything with the exception of a few choices that cost (2-3 dollars more an order). It cannot be justified that if you are already paying 30 dollars for a meal that you pay 2-3 more dollars for an order of nigiri that will have too much rice, and not enough fish. Maaaybe, a dollar more an order... maybe! That's the other quirk, this place DEFINITELY tries to fill you with rice. The nigiri I ordered had a mound of rice with a really thin slice of fish on top... the result? The rice OVERPOWERS the fish, so all you taste is the rice. Can you just not eat the rice? NO! that is considered wasted food and you will be charged more money for it. I think that if they used HALF the amount of rice they did (and more fish), the overall taste of the fish can be appreciated. Fish quality (when you can taste it) was not too bad, but around average. I have found this same issue with the rolls. Most had california rolls as a base with some fish on top. Again, too much rice, being a little too cheap on the fish. As far as service goes, in-between orders took a little tooo long, and the "hot green tea" drink option was merely a cup of hot water, and a generic bag of green tea... um no. What if I want more (a cup is surely not enough)?... I have to brew another one? And if you are going to do this, make sure it is a good bag of tea. I much rather have a pot of tea. BUT! If you like simple california rolls or salmon rolls, order the level 1 for lunch ($15) and knock yourself out. My friends seemed to enjoy those rolls as is, nothing too fancy. I will give them props for willingness to do split checks. Disclaimer: I am from Cali where I have had my share of well-done AYCE experiences of sushi restaurant, so call me spoiled but this place does not compare even after accounting for regional differences. However, to add context, I do think that Wasabi is a decent place to eat, though it's no AYCE. I would comment on Sekisui Pacific Rim, but it's been too long since I have been there.

Love this place! Come here every Monday and ask them to surprise me on my order. Best bang for your buck for sushi, staff is great also. People must know when ordering sushi that everything is made to order and it is not a fast food joint.

I wish that I knew about this place earlier. According to their menu, it has been open since 2008. First thing I would advise is that you make reservations. We made reservations. During our time there, they must have turned away at least 25 people. We had a party of 7. We went on a Saturday at 6:30pm. We were seated right away. WIth the All You Can Eat options, if 2 or more people choose the same level, they can share their sushi rolls with each other. So the whole table choosed Level 3 which is about anything you want on the regular menu. The sushi was delicious. We also ordered some appetizers, the crab rangoon and spring rolls. They were scrumptious! We ordered about 12-14 rolls to start. It was the perfect amount. Our second round took a little bit longer to come out and I think we were starting to get full by letting our tummies digest all the sushi from the first round. So I would recommend ordering your second round when you are halfway through with the first round. Another thing about the all you can eat, to make it be worth the price, we all agreed that you have to have a party size no smaller than 4-5 people who agree to choose the same level. I will definitely be going back to Blue Ocean soon with either the same group of friends or some other friends who love sushi!

I went here for lunch and was disappointed to see that what I wanted was under Level 2, which was $19.99 (and I think $24.99 at dinner). That's a bit much for a solo meal. I ended up ordering a la carte, and my rolls tasted fine and fresh. But I was distracted by the heavy smoke smell that permeates the restaurant. No one was smoking when I visited, but people must smoke a ton in there later at night.

We decided to check this place out because it's close to our house and serves "all you can eat" sushi. Our normal AYCE sushi place is Sushi Ai on Dorsett, and that we didn't want to go that far on an icy night. Goodness, were we disappointed! First of all, the tiered pricing system for AYCE is difficult to follow. Yes, you can get AYCE for around $22, but the selections are so limited, I can't imagine anyone who loved sushi enough to order unlimited pieces would ever settle for tier 1. Tier 2 is around $28, and has a decent selection of rolls, but hardly any nigiri pieces. To get the REAL nigiri (tuna, salmon, yellowtail etc) you have to pony up $35 for the third tier. We settled on tier 2 and figured we'd stick with rolls. We each proceded to order several different types of rolls, when the server informed us about their draconian rule of limiting AYCE orders to 2 rolls per order. He said we were free to order as much as we wanted, but only TWO ROLLS at a time. So that's what we did -- and suddenly it made sense why they offered an AYCE deal. You see, the time between deliveries averaged around 20 minutes. So we'd order two rolls each, wait for delivery, eat, order two more, then wait - and after about two hours, we'd only had about three rounds. I did a quick calculation, and realized that if we'd placed the exact same order a la carte, we would have saved money. The sushi itself was pretty decent, and to their credit, they did have some very interesting roll combinations. But they are not good enough to be as expensive as they are - and they're too expensive to hold their clientele to such strict rules. We will go back to our standby out west and pay less than $20 for a REAL all-you-can-eat experience at Sushi Ai.

A quick update worthy of sharing. I would qualify us and especially those in our party as regulars here (knowing the owners and hostesses) and frankly we were floored upon our last visit. The mercury had dipped below 20 that night and the restaurants' heaters were not working. We asked numerous times if there was anything being done (opening the door to the 609 next door, portable elements) and our requests fell on deaf ears. Not even an apology was offered nor any discount. The restaurant was half empty on a Saturday evening for obvious reasons, but the establishment offered no condolences. Our favorite hostess offered only that she is always cold so was coping. I found this quite surprising. My confidance has dropped at one of our favorite sushi restaurants in town.

Came across this place by accident and was glad I did. Very nice, quick service, really cute decor and yummy sushi. All for a reasonable price. I recommend the Sunset Roll and the Fried Philly.

My friend had a Groupon for his place so we checked it out on a Saturday. It is a small location across from Blueberry Hill in the Loop. I found the decor to be clean and simple. The service was good. The selection of Sushi could've been a bit larger but what we ordered was good. The price was decent with the $10 groupon our tab was around $38 for about 5 sushi rolls & 2 beers (it included gratuity so that was a bonus). Overall decent experience, I'd probably go again.

Had to go again, went last Saturday mid day. We missed the all you can eat, so we ordered right off of the menu, still awesome. Try the Shrimp Fried Rice its great!!!!! The crowd was very light, the only draw back was that the cleanliness. Tables were dirty

Great place to spend several hours sharing food w/friends. Just make sure you all order the same Level on their All-U-Can Eat menu. All their sushi is made fresh, so it takes a while to make & arrive at your table. Just order 3-4 items at a time, then order more immediately when those come. The place gets crowded, so make a reservation, and go early. You will be there a few hours anyway.

This formerly-excellent all-you-can-eat sushi place moved locations (a couple blocks down on Delmar from their previous spot), and apparently decided to leave behind customer service, quality ingredients, and pest control in the move. I've been to Blue Ocean in their original location several times, and always loved it. The sushi was good, the prices were great for all-you-can-eat, and while the service wasn't lightning-fast, it was always pleasant and helpful. I went tonight to their new location (in the building where Seki used to be), and boy have the changed. They've done away with the vegetarian all-you-can-eat option, which is extremely frustrating, because I'm not paying the same price for a menu on which I am not able to eat half the items. The service was slow when we got there and were only the third table in the place; it was excruciating two and a half hours later when every table plus all the seats at the bar were full - and there were still only two waitstaff. We only managed two rounds of food in the entire time we were there, which was half what we'd gotten before in less time. While we were there, no less than three people from separate tables walked to the kitchen to find out when their food was going to arrive. The kicker, though, was when two cockroaches crawled out from under the painting on the wall behind me. I went to find a waiter, and this was apparently not a big deal for him. He responded, "Oh, yeah, I'll take care of that", and then did absolutely nothing. We moved to a separate table of our own accord, and the same guy seated another group there a couple of minutes later. To sum up: Avoid at all costs!

This is an amendment to my review. I wrote this review the day after I dined here. A few days later I got a phone call from the owner of the restaurant. He saw my review on here, realized he had my phone number because I had made reservations, and called me to apologize for the service my party received and to let me know he was doing everything he could to correct the mistakes I had encountered at his restaurant. He said they appreciate honesty like this so they know how to make their service better. He offered me a free meal next time I came by. I was blown away by the fact he took the time to find my number, call me, and apologize. I think it shows that though this place doesn't get it right yet, they are fairly new and are really TRYING to get it right. So I will be giving this place another chance, because the owner is clearly trying to right the problems encountered at his restaurant.
